Sauce/Roma Tomatoes*All pictures not labeled 'Territorial Seed Co.' are courtesy of WestWinds Nursery* Experience the joy of making your own tomato sauce or paste! Roma type tomatoes are easy to grow and tend to mature faster and produce better than full sized slicing tomatoes in cooler summers. In addition, their high yields of deliciously tasty fruit ensure that even a novice gardener can produce a large batch of flavorful and healthy, home grown tomato sauce, year after year!
Here are the varieties that we tend to carry every year:
Costoluto Genovese Multi-purpose Italian Heirloom. Deep red, flattened and ribbed with a rich full flavor. 75 - 78 day Glacier: 55 days. You can count on Glacier to usher in the tomato season. This very early tomato variety produces attractive orangey-red 2 1/2 inch tomatoes. Perfect for salads or fresh eating. Surprisingly sweet for an ultra-early type. Expect a determinate habit plant that is about 2 1/2 feet tall, 3 1/2 feet across, and quite open. Jaune Flamme: 90 days. Plant produces heavy yields of 3 oz orange tomatoes. Tomatoes are very sweet. Excellent for salads and gourmet dishes. A heirloom variety from France. Indeterminate.
Japanese Trifele: 80-85 days. A truly transcendent tomato. Pear-shaped fruit has green-streaked shoulders, deepening to a burnished mahogany and finally to a darkened, nearly black base. The meaty interior has similar, opulent shades and an incomparable, almost indescribably complex and rich flavor to match. The fruit reach 2 1/2-3 inches long and wide and are very crack-resistant. Despite the name, this thoroughbred has its origins in Russia. Indeterminate, potato-leafed plants. La Roma: 76 days. Plant produces high yields of 5 to 8 oz red plum shaped tomatoes. One of the very best Italian type tomatoes on the market. Excellent for making tomato puree, paste, and sauce. Suitable for home gardens and market growers. Disease Resistant: VFFNA. Determinate. Patio: 70 days. This plant produces large yields of 2" round red tomatoes. Excellent for small gardens or containers. Great for school projects. Kids love them. Disease Resistant. Determinate. Principe Borghese: 80 days. In the Tuscany region of Italy, racks of this small, 1 x 2 inch, fragrant tomatoes fill backyards, to be dried and used in winter sauces and cooking. This prolific little tomato is also well suited to growing for market and for selling as a complete truss. Can be stored well into the fall without drying. Determinate plants.
Roma: 70 days. Compact plants produce paste-type tomatoes resistant to verticillium and fusarium wilts. Meaty interiors and few seeds. Mid season, produces 2 oz fruit on 30-36" plants. Determinate.
San Marzano: 78 days. Heirloom from Italy. Compact and prolific producer of bright-red, slim, 2-3 inch, plum-type, fruit over a long season. A paste tomato with pointy end, heavy walls and little juice, so it's great for tomato sauce. Crack resistant. Better tasting than Roma. Semi-determinate. Sweet Olive: 57 days. Bite-size, firm, oval-shaped grape tomatoes. Fruits avg. 10 gm. Plants have medium-short internodes and are manageable without pruning, but staking is recommended. Determinate. Viva Italia: 75 days. This plant produces good yields of very flavorful and solid red plum shaped tomatoes. Tomatoes turn deep red when mature. This variety is excellent for eating fresh, as well for canning & freezing, and making paste, sauce, and salsa. Disease Resistant. Indeterminate.
