Seed Starting and Propagating Equipment You will find just what you need to get your plants started during the cool season. We've got heat mats, grow lights, seed starting soils and the trays or containers to grow plants in. To get a head start on your spring crops you can begin starting seeds indoors that will either get planted out early in the year like peas, broccoli and greens or plants whose starts take longer like tomatoes or peppers. You can start your tomatoes and peppers inside beginning in early February. For best results use a heat mat to help germinate the seeds and use grow lights once the seeds have germinated. We find that for tomatoes 75 to 80F for germination gives you a fast start but you will need to reduce the heat after germination down to something more reasonable like 60 to 65F. Remember to condition your starts to the outdoors when the time comes. Move the starts outside for only a few hours at first and be careful if the sun is shining as you can easily burn these tender plants in the first few days of exposure. For longer growing times indoors use grow lights with the correct light spectrum for plants. We now have mini florescent tubes that give you lots of the right light for only small power consumption. These light are great not only for seed starting but for supplementing the light for your houseplants that might like a little more light during those darker winter days.
