Palm Tree - Hardy palms for SeattleBelieve it or not there are several varieties of palms that do quite well in the Seattle climate. There are two varieties that have been sold and grown here for many years: the Mediterranean Fan Palm and the Windmill Palm. Both of these types have no problem surviving our weather and become good sized plants after several years in the ground. At least two other varieties, the Chilean Wine Palm and the Needle Palm, also will grow in our climate zone. There are several other varieties that some people have had success growing in our area, but they may be killed by extremely cold or cold and wet winters. The Windmill Palm is the taller of these two and can reach 30 feet tall with a crown of 10 feet wide. This normally grows as a single trunked palm and looks similar to what most people picture when they think of a palm tree. (Out until spring) The Mediterranean Fan Palm normally sprouts new shoots from the base of the plant to form a clump rather than a single stem. These palms will grow into an 8 to 12 foot tall plant with nearly equal width. A Fan Palm will reach a nearly mature size in a much shorter time than the Windmill Palm. (Out until spring) The Chilean Wine Palm is another single trunk palm that grows even taller than the Windmill Palm in our climate. This palm is native to Chilean mountainous regions and will tolerate even our cooler winters. These palms can reach well over 40 feet in height. The appearance of the Wine Palm is similar to that of a coconut palm with its longer fronds. (Out of stock) The Needle Palm is a plant similar in growth habit to the Fan Palm as it sets lots of new shoots from its base. It too reaches just over 10 feet in maximum height and can be as wide as it is tall. Its name comes from its characteristic of porcupine-like quills that line its trunk. (Out of Stock)
