Ficus Tineke (Variegated Rubber Tree) shown with other tropical house plants at Magnolia Garden Center. Rubber trees are among the easiest of house plants to grow. They can go for many days between waterings with no ill effects. They benefit from bright light but do not usually like to be grown in the direct sunlight.
Split-leaf Philodendron (Monstera deliciousa) Also called Mexican Breadfruit, these houseplants thrive in higher humidity and lower light levels than most. The younger leaves are solid without the splits or holes. The older leaves can grow to almost a yard in length. As the plants get bigger they also grow aerial roots which can be an attractive addition. We usually carry both young plants in 6" or 8" pots as well as older, more mature plants with much larger leaves.
Alocasia nigra (Black Elephant Ears) (shown here with a banana on the left and a rubber tree on the right) are grown from large potato shaped tubers. These plants and similar to the Alocasia grown in Hawaii from which the taro root is cultivated to make poi. As a houseplant, these can be spectacular and easily grow to over 5' tall. The black stems are smooth and shiny complementing the oversized leaves. They like water and can be grown in a small water feature. They can also be grown outside in the summer but must be brought inside for the winter in our climate. Tropical House Plants We carry a wide variety of tropical plants for decorating your home. Whether it's an African Violet for a small table or window sill or a large Palm for that sun room you'll find lots of tropical house plant choices at Magnolia Garden Center.
